Meesha Shafi, who most recently starred in Mira Nair‘s Hollywood flick ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist‘, has made major inroads in Bollywood with her debut in the star-studded ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag‘.  The Pakistani singer-model-actress will play Perizaad, the best friend of the film’s subject Milkha Singh.  She will star alongside the likes of Sonam Kapoor, Farhan Aktar, Divya Dutta, and Prakash Raj.

The film itself will focus on the incredible life story of Milka Singh, also known as “The Flying Sikh”, who overcame losing many of his family members during the violence following India and Pakistan’s partition to become the only Indian to win a Gold medal at the Commonwealth games.

Meesha is also a major singer in Pakistan with her song Alif Allah (Jugni) with Arif Lohar being the most watched Pakistani song on Youtube ever with over 12 million views so far.

When asked about her work in Bollywood, Meesha replied that “Our cultural heritage and stories are so deeply rooted that it is only natural to relate to the cinema being made here. Art is definitely a universal language and just as Bollywood has a huge audience in Pakistan, Pakistani music has a vast listenership in India. Both countries are doing an immense service by bridging gaps and reaching out to the people. In fact I would say that Bollywood and Pakistan have an age-old relationship.”

Let’s hope this Pakistani actress and her art can facilitate a better dialogue between India and Pakistan’s similar cultures and shared national heritages.

‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ will be released on July 12th, here’s a trailer for the film:
