Bollywood/Hollywood actor Anil Kapoor originally played a supporting role as Islamic leader Omar Hassan on the last season of the U.S. version of ‘24‘, but he’s taking on the leading role of everyone’s favorite anti-terrorism agent Jack Bauer on the Indian version of the show. Anil bought the rights for ‘24‘ in late 2011 with the intention of adapting it for Indian audiences so it only makes sense that he will play the lead role of protagonist Jack Bauer, originally played by Kiefer Sutherland.

24‘ was a show that covered a 24-hour period in Counter Terrorism Unit agent Jack Bauer’s life using a real time method of narration in which a prominently displayed ticking clock coupled with split screens depicting different, simultaneous occurences heightened the audience’s sense of drama and peril. The original ‘24‘ ran for eight critically acclaimed seasons in the U.S. and also has the distinction of being the longest running espionage-themed show in history, beating out the original ‘Mission: Impossible‘ show and British show ‘The Avengers‘.

Anil took to Twitter to tweet “”First look of 24 India! The teaser looks great. Can’t wait to show it to you guys!“. Famous Bollywood writer Niranjan Iyengar, of ‘My Name is Khan‘ fame, will write the dialogue with Rensil D’Silva also writing and Anil acting/producing.

Anil and his writing team have hinted that the Indian version will be different than the Hollywood version, but they’ve been sparse on particulars. The American version of ‘24‘ sometimes came under attack for its depictions of Muslims and accusations that it glorified torture, but was on the whole a well-received show. No word yet if Anil’s Indian-version of Jack Bauer will flip the script by torturing Caucasian terrorists (perhaps Checnyans and others?) but we’ll keep you posted!
