Hollywood icons John Travolta and Kevin Spacey took part in all the fun this past weekend as Tampa welcomed the first ever IIFA Awards held in the United States to town. Festivities kicked off with Travolta and Spacey joining Bollywood megastars Deepika Padukone, Hrithik Roshone, and Anil Kapoor, among others, on stage for many song and dance routines that reflected Travolta’s musical film past along with Bollywood’s affinity for musicals both past, present, and future.
A lucky 20,000 people caught this year’s IIFA Awards show, which is slated for release on worldwide television in June, and IIFA said it expects 800 million people to ultimately watch the awards show as Bollywood continues to increase its global footprint.
Travolta was presented with an award for his contribution to international film and gushed afterwards about the proceedings. “The first musical number, it was, wow, that was amazing,” Travolta opined on Saturday. “I find Indian films very original in energy and life. Every time I’ve had an opportunity to sing or dance in a movie, it’s been glorious … I think we’re simpatico. I would love for the Bollywood influence to actually infiltrate and give Hollywood more confidence in musicals and dance. Musicals in Hollywood are sporadic.”
Travolta had an impromptu chance to relive his ‘Saturday Night Fever’ days with star Hrithik Roshone as the latter presented him with his career achievement award.
Kevin Spacey also wowed the crowd with his dance with the big winner of the night Deepika Padukone to the tune of the ‘Lungi Dance’ and even donned the song’s signature wrap around over his tux for the show-stealing performance at the star-studded event. The Oscar-winning star of classics such as ‘American Beauty’ and ‘The Usual Suspects’ seems to have enjoyed himself as he said ‘It is great to be here and see the performances at IIFA.’
Bollywood stole the selfie trend from Hollywood as Anupam Kher tweeted a selfie with Spacey, Priyanka Chopra, Arshad Warsi, Aftab Shivdasani, Ritesh Deshmukh and Rajiv Kapoor where everyone seems to be having a great time from IIFA!

71 year-old Megastar, Amitabh Bachchan was honored with the Global Diversity Award 2013, at the State Room of Britain’s House of Commons.
Rt Hon John Bercow MP, the Speaker of the House of Commons, presented the prestigious award to the Bollywood Godfather. He called him “a Bollywood icon and the most famous Indian film star of all time.”
He continued to describe the actor as a role model, saying: “You have been a role model and Amitabh you deserve the award.” British actor Hugh Grant was also present at the award ceremony. Adding, “It is truly a great pleasure meeting Amitabh Bachchan. He is a gigantic actor, super star who is hugely popular. He is also like a saint in some way because of his charity and animal welfare work. If ever anyone who deserves the Global Diversity Award, it is Amitabh Bachchan. Congratulations.”
The ceremony recognized Amitabh as one of the most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. He’s been seen in over 180 films in the last four decades and continues to make an impact even today. “He is a Global patron for the diabetes charity Silver Star and last year was presented with a Mobile Diabetes Unit for his home city Mumbai named ‘Amitabh’ in his honor,” the citation said.
Mr Bachchan was filled with gratitude when receiving the “extremely historic award.” He continued to say: “I have been extremely overwhelmed by the love and affection of the people of Great Britain,” and thanked his parents and family for their support in achieving what he did. He said when Keith Vaz introduced him to the Diabetes awareness campaign, “It has been a great privilege and honor to visit various cities in helping people to tackle diabetes.”
“My father taught English in Allahabad University and in 1952 he was the first Indian to get a Doctorate in English Language at the Cambridge. He completed his Doctorate in two years instead of the normal 4 years.” “There are very few institutions which can boast of such unity as the Film industry.” he added, referring to Bollywood of course.
When Mr Bachchan was asked about his forthcoming plans, he responded by saying “I just did a film called Satyagraha which dealt with socio-political issues. There are several other films in the pipeline including Bhootnath 2. I am also currently busy with the latest Hindi version of Who wants to become a Millionaire.
Congrats to Mr Amitabh Bachchan!
