Bollywood Legend’s Son Trying his Hand at Hollywood Producing!

photo:timesofindia

Uday Chopra, son of legendary Bollywood director Yash Chopra, has begun producing a string of Hollywood movies with big-name talent involved. Uday has opened a branch of his father’s Yash Raj Films right here in Los Angeles and has wasted no time in lining up heavy-hitter Hollywood actors for his films.

Beginning with Nicole Kidman (with whom Uday appeared beside at this year’s Cannes Film Festival) starring in the Grace Kelly biopic “Grace of Monaco”, continuing with the upcoming Jason Bateman romantic comedy “The Longest Week”, and perhaps culminating in the project “The Seducing of Ingrid Bergman” Uday has an ambitious slate lined up for release. Perhaps the Hollywood ingenue has a thing for classic Hollywood blondes as the Ingrid Bergman script coupled with the Grace Kelly biopic point out an interesting affinity for icy blondes, but he’s set out to make his mark in a town where shattered dreams are almost as plentiful as stars on the Walk of Fame.

Uday pointed out that “People in the West think ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is a Bollywood film and they have that one image of India — dirty and crazy…” but he notes that he’s here to make Hollywood films on a Bollywood budget while changing America’s perception of India. After overcoming the notion that he was just another rich Indian tycoon who had come along to “throw money at them and they can go ahead and make their movie” or “they think you are this Indian guy coming to Hollywood to throw big parties, make some statements and then never return”, Uday has accomplished something many Hollywood hopefuls never do by actually making movies.

It seems that while his brother Aditya Chopra has followed in his father’s footsteps by directing in Bollywood, Uday has decided to stay out of the director’s chair and focus on feature film development stateside. Uday summed up his aim as this; “I wanted to do something challenging and be a part of filmmaking because that is all I know“.

In a town that seems pretty white-washed both on the big screen and in the board room at times, we hope that Uday finds a niche and continues bringing the worlds of Hollywood and Bollywood closer together.

Beyond Bollywood: A special tribute to Indian Americans

The Smithsonian will be giving a special tribute to Indian Americans by displaying a “Beyond Bollywood” exhibit this weekend.

This eye-opening exhibit will put the spotlight on Indian Americans and their many contributions within the United States, from the early 1900s to present day. The main purpose of this exhibit is to dispel the stereotypes which society has developed over time about Indian Americans. They plan on achieving this by showcasing the lives of the early Indian immigrants and their part in helping to shape the US. The exhibit will showcase artifacts, music, photographs and much more. It will be presented by the Asian Pacific American Center at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, in Washington, DC, on February 27th.

The title “Beyond Bollywood” was chosen to capture the attention of people who want to learn about the 3 million Indian Americans, who reside in the US today. The focus will be set on Indian heritage and the numerous accomplishments which Indian Americans have made throughout the years, that go beyond entertainment.

“Beyond Bollywood” is the first major national exhibition to focus on Indians in America. Despite the fact that Indians have been here since 1790 and now number more than 3 million, we’ve been largely left out of this country’s history. Beyond Bollywood marks a significant step toward not only documenting the history of Indians in America but also imprinting this history onto the collective conscience of this country.” said Curator Dr. Masum Momaya.

Very cool! The exhibit is said to be up for the remainder of the year.

Liverpool Model turned Bollywood star Amy Jackson does PETA Ad

Bollywood newcomer Amy Jackson is following the footsteps of other B-town celebs, by shooting a campaign with PETA to help encourage people to adopt homeless animals.

Bollywood has been on the PETA wagon for a while now and it seems the trend is only growing. The purpose of the campaign is to promote animal adoption and to stop animal cruelty all together. The actress is featured in the ad with a cat, which she rescued when he was just 6-weeks-old.

“We can stop the cycle of animal homelessness and save lives by opening our hearts and homes to a loving cat or dog from an animal shelter instead of buying animals from breeders or pet shops.”

“Every time someone buys a cat or a dog from a breeder or a pet shop, a cat on the streets or in an animal shelter loses his or her chance at finding a good home,” says the British model-actress.

Stars like John Abraham, Shilpa Shetty, Ayushmann Khurrana and Imran Khan have also supported PETA causes in recent years.

Right on, Bollywood!
