Akshay Kumar: Pakistani Contributions to Bollywood Valuable and Memorable

At a time when Pakistani/Indian relations are tense and a Pakistani film named ‘Waar‘ is setting box-office records in Pakistan, it’s nice to see actor Akshay Kumar reaching out to give Pakistani contributors to Bollywood their due.  Recently Akshay had the following to say regarding Pakistani additions to Bollywood: “From their powerful dialogue delivery to incredible music talent, Pakistanis have made valuable contribution to Bollywood. Some of the most memorable songs of Bollywood have been sung by Pakistani artists and the opportunities to work together will be endless.”

Akshay’s latest film ‘Boss‘ hit theaters last week and has already collected 45.55 million Rupees (or $732,183) in India’s domestic box-office. In stark opposition to Indian production ‘Boss‘ is Pakistan’s ‘Waar‘, which has done record business in Pakistan by earning 42.6 million Rupees (or $693,000 roughly) in it’s first three days of release. The controversial film, which some believe was funded in part by the Pakistani government, beat out Kumar’s ‘Boss‘ 10 million mark it’s first three days of release in Pakistan.  ‘Waar‘, starring Shaan Shahid, seems to place the blame for Pakistan’s terrorist woes squarely on Indian shoulders, especially India’s RAW (India’s version of the C.I.A., it stands for Research and Analysis Wing).  Political murders, kidnappings, and other malfeasance are conducted by two Indian RAW agents in the film.

Although the film has done well in it’s first weekend, it remains to be seen if ‘Waar‘ can recoup its high 250 million Rupee (roughly $4 million) budget despite the record returns early on. Even with the film’s controversial subject matter and story line, let’s be optimistic that ‘Waar‘, which means “to strike” in Urdu, signals a renaissance in Lollywood and the beginnings of a new Pakistani national arts platform. Some art is better than no art, we hope.

Surprise! Hugh Jackman was chosen to be the brand ambassador of Micromax, an Indian mobile handset company.

The Hollywood star has openly expressed his love for India.  He supports Indian brands and is delighted to be the face behind Micromax.

I am extremely thrilled and honoured to be part of the Micromax family. I am a huge lover of India as it is one of the most exciting countries in the world and we also share our love for cricket,” said the 45-year-old actor.

Born in Sydney to English parents, Hugh Jackman is better known for his roles in:  X-Men: First Class, The Wolverine and Les Miserables, to name a few.

The actor is super supportive of the brand. “Phones are genuinely time saving devices that can help you live a better life while juggling around with different situations. The new Canvas phone from Micromax is a leap in innovation with great sense of fun and amazing features that helps me balance my work with all the different roles that I play in my everyday life,”  Jackman said in a statement.

We hear he beat out a Bollywood star for this position.  That’s huge, considering it’s an Indian brand.  Reportedly, the Micromax family truly believes Hugh Jackman “embodies the aspirational, reinventing and fearless persona of the brand”.

Miss America Nina Davuluri Inspring Bollywood Dance Classes In South Beach

America’s first Indian-born Miss America Nina Davuluri’s performance in the Miss America pageant has inspired people as far away as South Beach to try their hand at a little Bollywood glamour. The multi-talented pageant queen’s influence has led to a demand for Bollywood-fusion inspired dance classes from the hip denizens of South Beach.

The New York beauty used these same dance moves to help her win the Miss America pageant and dance instructors now show them to their mixed-race classes to women ranging in age from their teens to their 70’s.

Although some of the members of these Bollywood fusion dance classes are Indian-Americans looking to rediscover their Indian roots, many of the class members are not Indian American and half of them are Latinas who appreciate the sexy moves Ms. Davuluri displayed during the pageant.

Here’s a look at her dance routine during the pageant:

Miss Davuluri seems set on attending med-school, but maybe her mind will change if Bollywood comes calling.

Bollywood’s King Khan Accused of Plagiarism?

photo:desimartini.com

The Bad shah of Bollywood just can’t seem to keep away from controversy.  The Bollywood King is in hot water again,  but this time he’s being accused of plagiarism.

Recently Shah Rukh Khan attended the AIMA ( All India Management Assocication) where he gave a lengthy speech in which he discussed the various issues facing society.  The 47-year-old is being accused of plagiarizing British author JK Rowling’s speech, which she made at Harvard back in 2008.

Reportedly, SRK had a ghostwriter and resorted to different sources for the speech. The allegations claim he copied Rowlings speech, and did not appropriately credit anyone.   Tsk tsk..

Coincidence?
