Freida Pinto Decries Lack of Female Writers and Directors in Entertainment!

The 28-year old ‘Slumdog Millionaire‘ and ‘Immortals‘ star has gone on the record to bring attention to the lack of women in creative behind-the-scenes roles in the male-dominated entertainment industry.

Freida Pinto told CNN recently “The only way to cure that problem is to have more female writers and more female directors. There will be a different perspective when you have women writers and women directors. There is sometimes a misconception that a female director can’t really tackle manly issues and definitely Kathryn Bigelow proves them wrong.”

Does this mean Ms. Pinto is going to put her money where her mouth is and perhaps get into writing or directing in the near future?  Not likely yet as her schedule is packed with more film roles in projects like Terrence Malick‘s ‘Knight of Cups‘ alongside Christian Bale and Richard Raymond‘s ‘Desert Dancer‘ coming out soon.  But perhaps when she has a second to think, she’ll opt to get behind the camera instead of infront of it.  We’re sure she’ll make an excellent director!

Meesha Shafi, who most recently starred in Mira Nair‘s Hollywood flick ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist‘, has made major inroads in Bollywood with her debut in the star-studded ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag‘.  The Pakistani singer-model-actress will play Perizaad, the best friend of the film’s subject Milkha Singh.  She will star alongside the likes of Sonam Kapoor, Farhan Aktar, Divya Dutta, and Prakash Raj.

The film itself will focus on the incredible life story of Milka Singh, also known as “The Flying Sikh”, who overcame losing many of his family members during the violence following India and Pakistan’s partition to become the only Indian to win a Gold medal at the Commonwealth games.

Meesha is also a major singer in Pakistan with her song Alif Allah (Jugni) with Arif Lohar being the most watched Pakistani song on Youtube ever with over 12 million views so far.

When asked about her work in Bollywood, Meesha replied that “Our cultural heritage and stories are so deeply rooted that it is only natural to relate to the cinema being made here. Art is definitely a universal language and just as Bollywood has a huge audience in Pakistan, Pakistani music has a vast listenership in India. Both countries are doing an immense service by bridging gaps and reaching out to the people. In fact I would say that Bollywood and Pakistan have an age-old relationship.”

Let’s hope this Pakistani actress and her art can facilitate a better dialogue between India and Pakistan’s similar cultures and shared national heritages.

‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ will be released on July 12th, here’s a trailer for the film:

Musical Based Off Mira Nair’s ‘Monsoon Wedding’

In some exciting Broadway news, Mira Nair‘s 2001 hit film ‘Monsoon Wedding‘ has been made into a musical and will be rehearsing for the Great White Way starting in September.  Nair has been working on the songs for the musical and said “We have about seven or eight songs done out of eleven.  We also have the book written and we will enter rehearsals in September in New York.

The 55-year old director has been one busy woman lately, having just released ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist‘ starring Hollywood stars Kate Hudson and Liev Schrieber and Bollywood actors Om Puri and Shabana Azmi along with Pakistani born Riz Ahmed.

What has the ‘Mississippi Masala‘ director been doing lately to keep busy?  Why, she’s been working on the fascinating story of eight-year old Ugandan chess prodigy Phiona Mutesi, who rose from her impoverished beginnings to become a grandmaster chess champion!  The film is based on a true story and “I have just signed the deal for the film. I am starting to research and we will shoot next year. The movie will be based in Uganda.” noted Nair.

Is there anything the multi-talented Nair can’t do at this point?  Who knows, maybe she’ll decide to conquer the music world as well, one can only hope….
