Salman Khan looks to ‘Kick” SRK out of Top Spot on Eid!

photo:salmankingdom.com

Looks like Salman Khan is trying to regain his spot on top of the Bollywood mountain as his new movie ‘Kick‘ has opened to stellar box office returns already since its July 25 release. Many Bollywood movies look to capitalize on the traditionally strong release date of Eid, a festival that marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, and Shah Rukh Khan was no different last year with his box office hit ‘Chennai Express‘. Salman probably felt a bit slighted as his films usually ruled the Bollywood screens on Eid, with his past films ‘Wanted‘, ‘Dabaang‘, and the 4th highest grossing Bollywood film ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ representing his recent stranglehold on the holiday. Well, ‘Kick’ is off to a good start as it has already made 86 crore (roughly $14.5 million) in its opening weekend.

‘Kick‘ is an action-romance hybrid in which Salman plays a character named Devil who seeks to truly seize the moment everyday, resulting in action packed scenes that even have Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan taking notice. Amitabh was so impressed with ‘Kick’s chase sequence, supposedly the longest ever in a Bollywood film, that he took a shot at Hollywood when he stated “Did you see the trailer of ‘KICK’..baaadooom !! Compares with anything that the other ‘wood’ brings out from their high end films ! See for yourself” and linked to a trailer of ‘Kick’.

Here’s that trailer of ‘Kick’, which also features co-star Jacquline Fernandez….

Well, what do you think folks? Will Salman take down Shah Rukh on Eid in this battle for Bollywood supremacy? Will ‘Kick‘ put ‘Chennai Express’ on a slow train to nowhere? I guess you’ll just have to stay tuned….

London will be honoring Bollywood by holding it’s very first rare memorabilia auction in London. In celebration of 100 years of Indian Cinema, a British auction house is selling items with the proceeds going to a great charity. The proceeds from 2 of the 150 items, along with a percentage of all sales, will be going towards British charity Pratham UK that aims to up the literacy level of India’s millions of impoverished children.

The auction will take place on Friday at the Westbury Hotel in Mayfair and reflects increased British, as well as global, interest in Bollywood and Indian cinema in general. 2013 is shaping up as a banner year both in domestic and global box office receipts with records seemingly shattered whenever a new film is released. University of London senior lecturer Anna Morcom noted “Since the 1990s, Bollywood has gone global on a new level, embraced enthusiastically by the Indian diaspora and through them has gained a presence in the mainstream of U.S. and U.K. culture.”

Even Saif Ali Khan has chimed in on the rise of Indian cinema globally, saying “My best investment is to join Bollywood. It’s such a good investment. The business is doubling. When we started, things were not the same. It’s a great time now for the filmmakers and actors.” Saif’s first appeared in a Bollywood movie back in 1992’s film ‘Parampara‘ and has gone on to become one of the many Khans that dominate the industry, the other three being icons Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. Bollywood’s most successful film to date is ‘3 Idiots‘, which grossed $60 million total worldwide, but that mark is sure to fall soon with production values, story lines, and distribution continuing to increase along with foreign investment in Indian films.

Valuable items include posters from such seminal Bollywood films as 1960’s ‘Mughal-e-Azam‘ and 1975 Amitabh Bachchan action starrer ‘Sholay‘, among other items. Conferro Auctions director Sharan Seth voiced the attitudes of many Brits when saying ‘With Bollywood such an ingrained part of our cultural identity and the timely centenary of Indian cinema, our first auction reflects India’s rich and vibrant history and artistic practices.’

Hooray for Bollywood!!

Was Jiah Khan MURDERED?????

In something straight out of a 1940’s Hollywood film noir, Indian forensic experts are now saying that a reexamination of the recently deceased actress Jiah Khan‘s remains revealed signs of a struggle. Though news stories had not long ago painted the young thespian’s struggles with depression following a faltering Bollywood career as motives for a suicide, her mother struggled violently against these initial assertions by both the media and Indian authorities. After Jiah Khan’s body was found in her Juhu Beach apartment speculation ran rampant that her flailing acting career and troubles with boyfriend Suraj Pancholi had led her to hang herself. A suicide note (claiming Suraj had raped Jiah, impregnated her, and then forced her to have an abortion) had also been found and Indian police even went so far as to arrest boyfriend Suraj for allegedly abetting the suicide.

Suraj was ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing and the scandal died down as yet another cautionary tale of a young ingenue who came to Bollywood with dreams of glamor only to taker her life when those dreams seemed to be faltering, but Jiah’s mother Rabia Khan would have none of it. After initially questioning the authenticity of the alleged suicide note, she then personally hired an independent forensic expert to reexamine the evidence, and has now publicly pointed the finger at Suraj Pancholi in the press. Rabia finally received the recognition of an Indian court that asked the authorities to reexamine the forensic evidence. Incidentally, Suraj is the famous scion of an acting family that includes his former actor father Aditya Pancholi and mother Zarina Wahab. He’s was scheduled to take his own turn on film by starring in the Salman Khan produced remake of Subhash Ghai‘s 1983 hit film ‘Hero‘ early next year, but those plans may have to be delayed.

Suraj and his family seemingly went on the offensive after he was cleared following Jiah’s June 3 suicide investigation. Suraj event went on to claim in interviews that Jiah was depressed at the time of her suicide, had tried to commit suicide previously (an attempt that Suraj says he stopped), that Jiah was abused by her ex-boyfriends, and had been raped by an older man when she was fourteen. His mother then went on the record as saying that Jiah Khan was too much in love with her son, suggesting an unhealthy connection for the deceased Jiah and Suraj.

Through it all, Rabia Khan would have none of it and her efforts may finally bear fruit. The independent forensic expert Rabia had hired, esteemed Dr. R K Sharma of the infamous Noida murder case, found that Jiah had 300 ml’s of alcohol in her stomach at the time of her death, meaning she was most probably incapacitated. This level of intoxication would make it very difficult for Jiah to hang herself as the Juhu Beach forensic experts had initially concluded. Dr. Sharma further suggested that an able bodied person would, however, be able to hang Jiah. He further found human tissue under Jiah’s fingernails and blood in Jiah’s nail clippings, suggesting a struggle right before her alleged suicide. Indian authorities at the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) at Kalina, Mumbai agreed with Dr. Sharma’s conclusion in a recent report regarding the pre-death struggle assertions and will most probably order an exhumation of Jiah’s body for further examination according to sources.

No word on who the alleged murderer may be, but some sources have said authorities suspect someone “very close to Jiah” may have committed what is seemingly turning from a suicide to a homicide investigation. We here at World SannaKhan will have more news of this increasingly bizarre case as it is unfolds.

Kunal Nayyar with his lovely wife Miss India 2006 Nayyar Kapur

Looks like Kunal Nayyar is one busy man these days. Not only has the British-born, Indian-raised actor starred as awkward physicist Rajesh Koothrappali on hit TV show ‘The BIg Bang Theory‘ for the past seven years, he also has a slew of movies on tap.  Kunal is appearing in ‘Dr. Cabbie‘, produced by Salman Khan, and ‘The Scribbler‘ as well as lending his voice to a character named Gupta in ‘Ice Age 4‘.

Kunal, who initially came to the U.S. to study business and took acting classes as a way to make friends, has truly enjoyed being a part of a hit American sitcom. When talking about his time on ‘The Big Bang Theory‘ Kunal called it “A dream come true. Like Bollywood, it’s extremely difficult to get a break in Hollywood. I have always wanted to be on an American sitcom. Everytime I think about the show, I pinch myself really hard to check if it’s for real. I feel very blessed and humble to be part of the show. This is a special moment in my career.

As for his upcoming films, Kunal said “there’s ‘The Scribbler’, which is a small role. It’s in the horror genre, something that I have been wanting to be a part of. The other is ‘Dr Cabbie‘ that’s produced by Salman Khan. I play a cab driver who’s an interesting character. I loved playing the role.”

Kunal has also said that although he’s currently working only in Hollywood, he hasn’t ruled out performing in Bollywood as he loves Bollywood films and “When the right time and project comes along I’ll definitely want to act in a Hindi film.”  Let’s hope he starts performing in Bollywood films as well and keeps increasing the profile of Indians in Hollywood!

Salman Khan and Lulia Vantur Over?

Salman letting Lulia know how many more dinners he’s taking her to….

Looks like serial dater Salman Khan has avoided yet another trip down the aisle as sources report he has broken up with his girlfriend, Romanian TV host and actress Lulia Vantur.  Salman and Lulia first met when Lulia’s then-boyfriend, Romanian music producer Marius Moga, introduced them in 2010 in Scotland on the set of Salman’s film ‘Bodyguard.’  This time around they became a couple when the Grammy nominated Marius dumped Lulia , but new reports have been rife with accusations that Lulia is actually still married to Marius!

Salman and Lulia have been seen everywhere lately, from palling around on the set of his next movie ‘Mental‘ to going out for romantic dinners, but it seems Salman’s family was none-too-pleased with the Romanian blond.  Some speculated that Salman’s quickie romance was a very public way for him to show that he had moved on from his ex-flame Katrina Kaif, but no one is certain why he decided to make things appear even more serious by giving Lulia one of his homes in Mumbai after only a few months of dating.

For the 47-year old Khan this relationship joins a long string of failed and extremely public pairings over the years that have included the likes of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Somy Ali, Sangeeta Bijlani, and Katrina Kaif.  Will our hero ever find true love?  Will Salman avoid the slammer and duck his vehicular homicide charges from 2003?  Will ‘Mental‘ ever be completed on time and released?  Will Salman reclaim his crown as King of Bollywood from Shah Rukh Khan?  Who knows, but truth is definitely stranger than fiction as these plots seem straight out of one of Salman’s Bollywood flicks.  Tune in next time for the next episode of As the Salman Turns folks!!!

Shah Rukh Khan’s Latest, ‘Chennai Express’, Breaking Box Office Records

Of course Deepika and SRK are all smiles after ‘Chennai Express’s monster weekend….

Well, it looks like Shah Rukh Khan has done it again as his latest film , ‘Chennai Express‘, is now the fastest Bollywood movie to join the 100 Crore ( $16.36 million) club and the only one to do so in its first weekend in theaters.  SRK’s co-star Deepika Padukone continues to have a career year as this is her third hit of 2013 along with ‘Race 2‘ and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani‘.

When responding to critics who say perhaps this just happens to be Deepika’s charmed year in film she said “If people are saying it’s my year, it depends on my films… I think these things are relative. It feels nice to hear or to read about it. But, more importantly, I have been working really hard. I know I have pushed myself and sacrificed a lot of personal and family time. But in the end if the result is like this, you don’t mind. But, yes, I think success is relative.”

And how did SRK himself feel about the film’s impressive numbers?  Well, he said “It’s just a number but I am happy that it’s done well and it’s after a long time I have done a film that all have watched. I have yet to see the film with the audience but it feels great...” when referring to the historically significant 100 crore mark the film raced past in its first weekend of release.

The film also managed to rake in money in foreign markets outside India, debuting at #13 in the U.S. film market with an impressive 18.35 crores ($2.25 million) take.  Director Rohit Shetty has to be considered one of the hottest Bollywood directors going with the success of ‘Chennai Express‘ hot on the heels of also successful ‘Bol Bachchan‘.

What does Salman Khan, who ever since 2008 usually releases a movie on Eid, think about the abdication of his August movie throne to King Khan?  Although he’s stayed mum in public, Salman has had to deal with numerous production problems on his latest film ranging form a co-star being charged with kidnapping to his own legal woes so seeing his rival do so well can’t sit well with the thespian.  We’ll just have to wait until next year to see if Salman’s 2014 film ‘Mental‘, which has been plagued by these delays during shooting, will return him back to the top of the heap….

Salman Khan Denied UK Visa!

In more bad news for troubled actor Salman Khan, the UK has denied his visa request thus putting his film ‘Kick‘ into serious trouble.  The 47-year old actor was attempting to join the rest of the cast for Sajid Nadiadwala‘s ‘Kick‘ in Glasgow, Scotland to shoot but was denied a visa for as yet unspecified reasons.

Salman attempted to clarify the situation by saying “There were some technical issues. Salman already has a 10-year tourist visa which is still valid. However, some issues came up while trying to get a work permit. They needed some additional papers, which have now been called for and will be presented to them.”  Many are guessing that the pending hit-and-run case the actor is facing along with the charges for culpable homicide may have given authorities in the UK pause.

Salman insists the visa has not been rejected but is simply on hold and he intends to file for the work visa again next week. ‘Kick‘ co-stars Jacqueline Fernandez and is a remake of the 2009 Telegu film of the same name.

Salman Khan Still Guiding Suraj Pancholi’s Career Despite Jiah Khan Suicide

Salman Khan, who is facing his own charges involving a 2002 hit-and-run World Sanna Khan reported on earlier, has continued to back his young protege Suraj Pancholi despite all of the negative press surrounding the youth since his estranged girlfriend Jiah Khan‘s suicide.  Salman has asked Suraj’s parents not to comment on the pending charges facing their son for allegedly abetting Jiah’s suicide.

Suraj is ready to make his bollywood debut in a remake of the 1983 film ‘Hero‘, which Salman is co-producing with Subhash Gai. Although Salman hasn’t officially announced the project yet and has been busy dealing with his own dramas while filming his next flick ‘Mental‘ in Hyderabad, reports had a dejected Suraj meeting with Salman on set to seek guidance.

Suraj’s father, actor Aditya Pancholi, said “I can’t say anything (about the meeting with Salman or Suraj’s debut venture). It’s not like Salman bhai has barred us from speaking, but he has said, ‘Ab main bolunga (now I will talk)’. So we would rather keep quiet….” when asked about the meeting with Salman.

A black cloud seems to be hovering around Salman these days as he has been in the press recently for ‘Mental‘ co-star Sana Khan being charged for kidnapping, his own legal issues stemming from a 2002 hit-and-run, an entertainment reporter saying that Salman used his muscle to quash a report about the accident on his online blog, and trouble with his Romanian girlfriend Lulia Vantur‘s ex appearing in the news.  This is in addition to the bad press surrounding Salman’s 21-year old acolyte Suraj Pancholi.  One has to wonder if Salman has let the insular world of stardom go to his head….
