Helen Mirren & Manish Dayal Set for Dreamworks ‘The Hundred Foot Journey’

Oscar-winner Helen Mirren and Manish Dayal of ABC Family’s ‘Switched at Birth‘ have signed on to culinary rival flick ‘The Hundred Foot Journey‘.  The film is based on Richard Morais’ best-selling debut novel and has heavy-hitters Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Juliet Blake producing.  Dreamworks’ partner Reliance Film will also be involved by distributing the film in India.

The film centers around the battles between a three-Michelin star rated restaurant, owned by Mirren, with an Indian restaurant, owned by Dayal, in a little town in the south of France called Lumiere.  Mirren will play the extremely talented but unpleasant French chef Madame Malory whom Dayal’s Hassan Haji pits his wits and natural born cooking talent against.  Who’ll come out on top?  I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Big Winners at Cannes Film Festival: ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’

Cannes Film Festival has come and gone and the Coen Brother’s latest film, ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ is emerging as the big winner from this years festival as the Grand Prix (runner up) choice from the Steven Spielberg led jury.  Oscar buzz is already building about this 1960’s fictional look at a folk singer struggling to make it in ’60’s New York.  Although the movie won’t be released until fall, prime Oscar season, critics have been praising the movie and even mentioning a possible Best Actor nod for Oscar Isaac in the titular role.  Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, and Carey Mulligan round out the latest from the helmers of ‘No Country for Old Men’ and ‘True Grit’ in a movie sure to be heavy on Dylan in the soundtrack.

Here’s a look at the compelling trailer:

If you pay attention you’ll notice a period appropriate Justin Timberlake in the film, which dovetails nicely with his recent retro album release and music.

The Palme d’Or went to ‘Blue is the Warmest Color’, although expectations for audience reception of this film should be tempered by the film’s three hour running time and controversial, highly eroticized lesbian romance subject matter.

Another movie making waves at Cannes was Nicolas Winding Refn‘s followup to ‘Drive’ called ‘Only God Forgives’ once again starring Ryan Gosling‘Only God Forgives’ is even more violent than Refn’s previous film, but let’s hope the auteur continues to push the cinematic envelope with his realistic/sickening displays of violence in his films.

Here’s a trailer for ‘Only God Forgives’ to wet your appetities:

Kristen Scott Thomas is receiving rave reviews for her turn as Gosling’s unabashedly Machievellian mother.

The flick is set for a July 19th release date in the U.S.

Bollywood Actress speaks out about Bollywood films

“The south Indian film industry is more traditional. This reflects in their work. The cultural differences, language and approach are completely different, while Bollywood is more open and caters to a wider audience,” says Bollywood actress Asin. “There is another key difference, down south people are ready to accept you the way you are. They appreciate and value simplicity. You don’t have to wear make-up or be in your glamorous image when you make public appearances.”

The Actress feels Bollywood depicts a more glamorous image, whereas the rest of the film industry doesn’t focus so much on it. True– Hollywood isn’t always about glitz and glam. You will find actors dressed like homeless people when you see them out and about. Hollywood even produces films that focus on real life issues where the actors are shown in a simple state.

Hmm…so why doesn’t Bollywood create more films relating to real life?

Amitabh tweeted “Another evening with Steven Spielberg at dinner… a gift for me from him… his coffee table book. What he wrote inside CBD. CBD: Cannot be disclosed.”  No word on which book it was or anything.

Very cute. Maybe we will see Amitabh in a Spielberg film sometime?
