Beyond Bollywood: A special tribute to Indian Americans

The Smithsonian will be giving a special tribute to Indian Americans by displaying a “Beyond Bollywood” exhibit this weekend.

This eye-opening exhibit will put the spotlight on Indian Americans and their many contributions within the United States, from the early 1900s to present day. The main purpose of this exhibit is to dispel the stereotypes which society has developed over time about Indian Americans. They plan on achieving this by showcasing the lives of the early Indian immigrants and their part in helping to shape the US. The exhibit will showcase artifacts, music, photographs and much more. It will be presented by the Asian Pacific American Center at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, in Washington, DC, on February 27th.

The title “Beyond Bollywood” was chosen to capture the attention of people who want to learn about the 3 million Indian Americans, who reside in the US today. The focus will be set on Indian heritage and the numerous accomplishments which Indian Americans have made throughout the years, that go beyond entertainment.

“Beyond Bollywood” is the first major national exhibition to focus on Indians in America. Despite the fact that Indians have been here since 1790 and now number more than 3 million, we’ve been largely left out of this country’s history. Beyond Bollywood marks a significant step toward not only documenting the history of Indians in America but also imprinting this history onto the collective conscience of this country.” said Curator Dr. Masum Momaya.

Very cool! The exhibit is said to be up for the remainder of the year.

Looks like Kunal Nayyar is one busy man these days. Not only has the British-born, Indian-raised actor starred as awkward physicist Rajesh Koothrappali on hit TV show ‘The BIg Bang Theory‘ for the past seven years, he also has a slew of movies on tap.  Kunal is appearing in ‘Dr. Cabbie‘, produced by Salman Khan, and ‘The Scribbler‘ as well as lending his voice to a character named Gupta in ‘Ice Age 4‘.

Kunal, who initially came to the U.S. to study business and took acting classes as a way to make friends, has truly enjoyed being a part of a hit American sitcom. When talking about his time on ‘The Big Bang Theory‘ Kunal called it “A dream come true. Like Bollywood, it’s extremely difficult to get a break in Hollywood. I have always wanted to be on an American sitcom. Everytime I think about the show, I pinch myself really hard to check if it’s for real. I feel very blessed and humble to be part of the show. This is a special moment in my career.

As for his upcoming films, Kunal said “there’s ‘The Scribbler’, which is a small role. It’s in the horror genre, something that I have been wanting to be a part of. The other is ‘Dr Cabbie‘ that’s produced by Salman Khan. I play a cab driver who’s an interesting character. I loved playing the role.”

Kunal has also said that although he’s currently working only in Hollywood, he hasn’t ruled out performing in Bollywood as he loves Bollywood films and “When the right time and project comes along I’ll definitely want to act in a Hindi film.”  Let’s hope he starts performing in Bollywood films as well and keeps increasing the profile of Indians in Hollywood!

Are Sonam Kapoor and Johnny Depp going to be sharing the silver screen any time soon?  Reports out of Hollywood have the makers of ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean‘ franchise looking for an Indian star for the next incarnation of the film.  Director Gore Verbinski and the producers of the film first reached out to a talent management company with their query and that company then contacted Sonam to audition for the film.

Sources say the audition was held on a video-conference with Sonam Kapoor in Mumbai, India and mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer, along with Walt Disney reps, watching from the United States.  No word on how Ms. Kapoor fared during the audition, but we’ll keep you posted on developments.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5‘ is scheduled to shoot in 2014 and be released in 2015.  Audiences can currently watch Sonam in the hit ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag‘ and the actress is also busy shooting an as yet untitled project from Yash Raj Film‘s with co-star Ayushmann Khurrana.

I’m sure you’re asking yourself who the old man and the kid are and exactly what they have to do with the latest Jackass movie, ‘Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa‘, but there’s a perfectly good explanation for all of this.  Unfortunately, it’ll have to wait until after you watch this hilarious trailer….

Curious?  The old man is none other than Johnny Knoxville himself made up to look like octogenarian Irving Zisman with Jackson Nicoll co-staring as his grandson Billy.  The film was directed by Spike Jonze of ‘Being John Malkovich‘ fame and shows the reactions of the unsuspecting public to scripted scenes involving the accident prone grandfather and his hapless grandson as they make their way across America.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa‘ makes its way into theaters October 25, 2013. Two words… Can’t. Wait.
